The question

If 95% of your business had to come through referrals, could your network reliably produce it?

Most people answer no. Including people who are respected by everyone who knows them.

That answer bothers them, because they know their best clients already come from referrals. They just cannot predict them, repeat them, or explain why last quarter was full of introductions and this quarter is empty.

Here is the part almost nobody tells you: that is not a reputation problem. The people who know you already trust you. It is a recognition problem. They do not know the specific situation that should make them think of you. So the introductions come in random, or vague, or pointed at a version of your work you left behind years ago.

Goodwill does not create introductions. Recognition does.

The shift

Most professionals believe referrals cannot be engineered. They are wrong about that.

The common beliefs sound reasonable. Referrals are luck. They cannot be generated consistently. They only come from a handful of close contacts. If you want predictable growth, you have to go sell to strangers.

None of that holds up. A referral is a transfer of reputation. When someone introduces you, they are lending you their trust, and they will only do it when the fit is clear enough to protect that trust. Which means referrals follow rules. The people who refer you well are not the ones who like you most. They are the ones who can place you: they know the problem, the moment, and the words.

Trust can be compounded. Referrals can become deliberate. But only after the people who already believe in you know exactly when to bring you up.

Each week

What you will learn, one issue at a time

Get Better Referrals runs like a series, not a tip sheet. Each week, one referral problem, taken apart:

01  Why a warm, well-meant introduction still went nowhere, and what was missing from it

02  Why wrong-fit referrals are not random, and what they reveal about what your network is listening for

03  What separates the people who refer you well from the people who only praise you

04  How to give your best relationships the trigger, the language, and the boundary that make introducing you easy

No motivation. No networking scripts. No pressure tactics for your contact list. Just the mechanics of how trust actually gets routed, shown through real introductions that worked and real ones that did not.

Who it’s for

This is for you if referrals already matter and are underperforming

Get Better Referrals is written for consultants, advisors, specialists, fractional leaders, and founder-led professional service firms. People whose business grows through trust, reputation, and warm introductions, and who are tired of watching those introductions come in slow, vague, or aimed at the wrong thing.

It is not for you if you want cold outreach tactics, generic lead generation, paid referral schemes, or a bigger contact list. More names is not the problem this solves. Better recognition is.

Why I write this

Ed Forteau

A few years ago I made myself a commitment: I would stop building my business by selling to strangers.

I kept it. And keeping it forced me to answer a harder question than I expected: if strangers are off the table, what makes referrals reliable enough to build on?

I had spent decades in the persuasion business. Direct response, email marketing, deliverability, LinkedIn outreach. I wrote a book, No More Cringe, about outreach that does not make people wince. All of that taught me communication precision: how to explain what you do.

Referrals turned out to need something different. Referral precision: helping the people who already trust you know when to bring you up. That shift, from persuading strangers to routing trust, is what this newsletter teaches, issue by issue, using what I learn building my own business this way.
